When Jen and Travis Konrath learned that their unborn son had a serious heart condition, their world stopped. As an Air Force family newly stationed in Colorado Springs, they were far from home, still unpacking boxes when their lives changed forever.
At just 14 weeks pregnant, doctors discovered that baby Mikey’s heart wasn’t developing as it should. From that moment on, every appointment brought new questions. “Would he survive? Could he live a normal life?”
When Mikey was born, he needed immediate surgery. Complications followed, and there were moments when his parents feared they might lose him. Through it all, the Konrath family found comfort and community at Ronald McDonald House of Denver. It gave them a home close to the hospital, meals to share with their other two boys, and the support of people who truly understood.
“We’re so grateful for support from Ronald McDonald House of Denver” shared Jen “They gave us a home away from home!”
As Mikey fought through surgeries, time on critical life support, and eventually the wait for a new heart, the House became their refuge. When the call finally came — “We have a heart!” — it was a moment that changed everything.
Today, Mikey is thriving. He’s growing, smiling, and living the healthy, happy life his parents once only hoped for. For Jen and Travis, Ronald McDonald House of Denver will always be the place where their family’s story of hope truly began.
Watch the Konrath family share their powerful story of resilience and gratitude.
