Getting ready for your child’s first dance class is an exciting adventure full of joy and anticipation. Whether your child is jumping with joy or tapping their toes with enthusiasm, they are in for a real treat! Every day, our dance classes provide a space that encourages growth and new friendships as our dancers learn choreography, gain skills, enhance coordination, and improve their physical fitness.

If you’re a parent getting your child prepped for this season’s dance classes, this guide is for you! Our team at Production Company Dance Centre created this list to cover everything you need to know. We’ll help you with everything from choosing the right dancewear to creating a supportive and encouraging environment. This way, you can concentrate on your dancer’s enjoyment. Let’s dive in!

How to Prepare for Your Child’s First Dance Lesson:

2-4 Weeks Before the Class

  • Understand the Studio’s Policies: Read through your chosen dance studio’s policies and dress code to ensure you and your child are aware of the expectations.
  • Get the Right Dancewear and Shoes: Make sure your child is dressed appropriately for class based on the studio’s dress code. Correct fit is important for leotards, tights, and dance shoes in order for your dancer to feel comfortable and ready to move. Every studio is different, so don’t hesitate to ask your school’s administrative staff if you have any questions!
  • Verify the Schedule: Verify the day and time of your child’s classes by consulting the schedule. Once you know the schedule, invite a friend to register too!

1-2 Weeks Before the Class

  • Visit the Studio: If you haven’t done so, check out the studio in-person during opening hours. Take your child so they can also get an idea of the studio layout and possibly meet their teacher in advance.
  • Talk About Class: Help your child understand the etiquette of the classes. Explain the importance of listening to the teacher and being respectful to their classmates. And don’t forget to remind them to have fun!
  • Practice Getting Dressed: Practice getting your child ready for dance class. This can help them become more comfortable with the dancewear and shoes, and make the actual class day less stressful.

On the Class Day

  • Arrive Early: Plan to arrive 5–10 minutes early to encourage a calm transition into the studio classroom. This gives your child a chance to settle in before the lesson.
  • Leave Unnecessary Items at Home: To prevent distractions or loss of items during class, make sure your child leaves any jewelry or toys at home.
  • Pack Dance Shoes: Dance shoes should be properly packed in a bag; do not allow your child to wear them outside. By doing this, you are helping to protect the condition of the shoes and the dance studio’s specialty flooring.
  • Healthy Snack: Give your child a quick, nutritious snack at home before class. A few well-balanced nutrients can help with focus and energy.
  • Prepare a Water Bottle: Hydration is important for all activities, especially dance. Consider packing a water bottle if the instructor allows them in class (and be sure to label it with your child’s name!)
  • Motivation: Reassure your child that it is OK to feel nervous. The most important goals of dance class are to have fun and learn new things.
  • Show Them Around: Show your child where the studio’s bathrooms and drinking fountain are located, and introduce them to studio staff who can help if your child has questions. Our front desk staff and GM are great resources!
  • Introduce Them to Classmates: If possible, introduce your child to a few of their classmates. This can help everyone feel at ease.
  • Stay Close By: If the studio permits it, try to stay close by, especially during the first class. Your child might feel more comfortable and safe knowing that you are around.

By spending time in preparation, including understanding studio policies, acquiring the proper gear, and reminding your child that it’s all about having fun, you are laying the groundwork for a positive first-class experience.

Keep in mind that dance class is an exciting learning journey! It’s not about getting every step right the first time. With time and patience, your child will fall in love with dance, develop new friendships, and become more confident in their abilities.
