On Thursday, Jan. 19, during National School Choice Week, the Invest in Education Foundation hosted a press conference in Denver along with scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) and local advocates on the new federal tax credit scholarship that could provide thousands of additional dollars to middle-and low-income Colorado area parents.
Invest in Education Foundation is a national organization educating the public and policymakers about the educational opportunity of the new federal tax credit scholarship program. The federal tax scholarship program was signed into law on July 4, 2025 and will generate exponentially more charitable donations to SGOs that will expand educational opportunity for tens of thousands of children in public and private schools across the Centennial State.
Last December, the U.S. Department of the Treasury through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) issued Revenue Procedure 2026-6 to allow the nation’s governors the ability to make an advance election to opt in to the federal tax credit scholarship program, to which Gov. Jared Polis did.
The federal tax credit scholarship program, to start in 2027, will help K-12 students access a school or education service of their parents’ choice. Scholarships are funded with private donations, not federal, state or local money, and donors receive a 100 percent federal tax credit of up to $1,700 annually. Public school students could also use scholarships for tutoring, after-school programs, special needs services, or education technology, among other uses.
