As many moms in low-risk pregnancies take a more personalized and natural approach to childbirth, interest in a cozy, low-intervention birth center is on the rise.

This fall, Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver opens Colorado’s first hospital-owned freestanding birth center just across the street from the main hospital.

The five home-like 500- to 600-square-foot birth suites reflect the varied personalities and colors of Denver, from the earthy Red Rocks suite to an elegant Uptown suite. Each room is also equipped with a spa-like hydrotherapy and birthing tub, a sling and ball, an aromatherapy mister, mini refrigerator, and plenty of room for the family to get comfortable.

The center’s model goes beyond cozy, well-appointed rooms for labor and delivery. As an expectant mom begins her pregnancy, she is matched up with other expectant moms who share a similar due date. The moms attend classes together and share their journey, building a supportive community that could follow them as they navigate life with their newborn.

The center expects to begin giving tours and registering moms in late June, and welcoming babies into the world sometime in early fall.
