Hardly a summer goes by when we aren’t asked for ideas on how to keep kids engaged during the hottest months of the year. This year we focused on the endless fun that kids (and parents!) can have with STEAM. Not the heat-rising-off-of-the-scorching-sidewalk steam, although you could learn about that too, but the subjects of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Maybe those topics don’t exactly conjure up images of exciting summer activities, but believe me, there are endless ways STEAM can engage kids’ minds, hands, creativity, and curiosity. And that’s a perfect formula for summer fun.

As you will read in our Good to Know section, this month marks the 50th anniversary of humankind’s first steps on the moon. It was truly one of the most inspiring STEAM marvels, even before STEAM was a thing. Turn to page 12 for a list of exciting events around Colorado that celebrate this anniversary. From IMAX films and astronaut visits to special exhibits and space-themed concerts, these events will spark an interest in the STEAM of space flight.

And speaking of milestones, summer also brings our annual birthday guide. If you are searching for new theme ideas for your child’s party, turn to page 35 for STEAM-inspired birthdays. Whether your child loves art and “making,” is obsessed with the planets, or is always conducting science experiments, these parties will delight.

While engaging kids in STEAM exploration is essential, we have to warn you: There will be questions…lots of questions. So to wrap up our STEAM theme, we give you a list of places to unwind after doing your best to answer why the Earth spins or how firecrackers work. Turn to page 62 for a roundup of family-friendly beer gardens around town. Cheers.
