Mission:
Butterfly Pavilion exists to foster an appreciation of invertebrates by educating the public about the need to protect and care for threatened habitats globally, while conducting research for solutions in invertebrate conservation.
Vision:
Butterfly Pavilion is the premier invertebrate research, conservation, and education institution in the world.
Organizational Overview:
Butterfly Pavilion is the first Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited, stand-alone, non-profit invertebrate zoo in the world. Butterfly Pavilion’s mission is to foster an appreciation of butterflies and other invertebrates while educating the public about the need for conservation of threatened habitats in the tropics and around the world.
Since Butterfly Pavilion opened its doors in 1995, we have welcomed more than five million visitors. Our guests include local neighbors and tourists from throughout Colorado, the United States, and the world. Butterfly Pavilion has become one of the top 10 cultural and scientific attractions in the Denver metro area.
Beyond Colorado, our global conservation effort reaches from Tanzania and Sumatra to Saudi Arabia and Mongolia. With decades of incredible community support, we find ourselves in a time of monumental growth—ready to transform and amplify into a world-class, state-of-the-art attraction, educational space, and expanded research facility in Broomfield, Colorado.
With declines in global insect populations, and the risk of further extinction related to global warming, Butterfly Pavilion’s mission of protecting invertebrates is even more critical today.
At Butterfly Pavilion, we transform the way people think about invertebrates. These small but mighty animals that surround us are so much more than people think. They are everywhere because everything depends on them.
We are living in a time of unprecedented, accelerated change and yet we understand so little about how many ecosystems function. Invertebrates are the foundation of our world. We rely on the foundational services invertebrates provide for our very survival, and most of the time do not consider the organisms that perform these services for us.
