These five hikes will get you out of the house to explore Colorado’s beautiful nature with a snowy backdrop.

Clear Creek Trail, Golden

If you’re looking to get out of the house for an easy but beautiful nature walk, Clear Creek Trail is a great choice. This two-mile paved trail allows bikes and strollers and runs along Clear Creek in Golden.

Adam’s Falls, Grand Lake

Adam’s Falls has a great waterfall view at just .3 miles in. Hike about a mile further to see a clear view of Mt. Craig (also known as Mt. Baldy for its uncovered peak).

Elk Meadow Park – South Loop, Evergreen

Elk Meadow Park has over 13 miles of hiking trails, but the South Loop is your best bet for a family-friendly hike. During this 2.6-mile hike, you’ll see sprawling meadows, an old barn, ponderosa pine, and possibly some wildlife!

Windy Saddle to Lookout Mountain, Golden

Just about a half-hour drive from Denver, this 2.9-mile hike offers great views at a low elevation gain, making it a good choice for younger kids.

Chautauqua Trail, Boulder

The Chautauqua hiking area lets you explore the Flat Irons with over 40 miles of hiking trails. You don’t have to hike all 40 miles to get stunning views, though. The Chautauqua Trail is just 1.3 miles and is popular due to its proximity to interesting rock formations. If you’re looking to hike for longer, you can follow the trail to the slightly more challenging Royal Arch trailhead, which will take you 3.3 miles.

Advice for Colorado winter hikes

  • Layer up and don’t forget your gloves.
  • Wear sturdy shoes. Hiking boots with good traction will help you navigate icy Colorado trails more easily.
  • Check the forecast. Colorado weather likes to change throughout the day, so make sure you check the forecast for any hiking trail you plan to venture on. If it’s below freezing or there’s heavy snow forecasted, save the hike for another day.
  • Tell people where you’re going. Letting people know where you plan to be is the easiest way to ensure safety in case of an emergency.
  • Check if you need a reservation. Lots of Colorado trails are popular and require reservations to ensure there aren’t too many people on the trail.
  • Bring sun protection. Even on a cloudy winter day, sun rays can still damage your eyes or skin. Cover any exposed skin with sunscreen, and wear sunglasses to help dim the reflective snow.
