Let’s be real – sometimes the pressure to celebrate Valentine’s Day can be a little too much. Between school, work, kid’s activities, and everything happening in your life, celebrating Valentine’s Day can be the last thing on the list.
Here are some Valentine’s alternatives that are family-friendly, low-pressure, and little more memorable than the usual candy-and-cards routine.
Family-First
Take a night and dedicate it to family time. Play some board games, make your own pizzas, watch a movie, or if you are feeling the love, create a “what I love about you” jar for each family member. If you feel like getting out of the house, try ice skating, tubing, or a walk instead of presents.
Maybe remind yourself and your kids the meaning behind Valentine’s and work to show kindness. Do small, daily acts of love through notes in lunchboxes, helping a sibling, or donating things like books or winter gear.
Friendship and Community
Celebrate friendships with a brunch, playdate, or carft night. Or swap compliments or gratitude notes instead of candy-heavy exchanges. Volunteer as a family at a food bank, animal shelter, or meal program.
If your kids are feeling more creative, chalk notes on sidewalks, surprise treats for neighbors, or thank-you cards for teachers.
For Kids Who Don’t Love Valentine’s Day
Celebrate “favorite things” day instead of Valentine’s Day this year with favorite books, songs, or hobbies instead of cards. Express self-love through journaling, affirmations, or decorating a “things I’m good at” poster or just doing the things you or the kiddos are good at.
Stay away from the cliche candy and cards by getting creative with Legos, art projects, or other fun (non-Valentine themed) crafts.
